Review: Beneath the Sugar Sky

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was incredible! Another wonderful tale from an amazing author. Seanan McGuire continues to expand on her intricate world of fantastical adventures and lovable misfit characters!

Writing:

The pacing of BtSS is really well done, despite being more of an action-packed story detailing an adventure, the pacing isn’t too fast that it skips out on details that would have left a reader confused. It tells the reader exactly what they need to know when they need to know and still allows for a cohesive plot-line that has been fleshed out.

The descriptions of the different fantasy settings are absolutely incredible, allowing enough room for the reader to imagine the locations as they wish; whilst providing enough imagery to clearly map out the world within your own imagination.

One of the main things I’m absolutely loving about BtSS is that the story follows more of a quest-style story. Although all three books have been fantasy adventures all in their own way, Beneath the Sugar Sky is following a group of friends travelling across fantasy lands to try and get to the end goals and for as long as I’ve been reading; stories like these have always been some of my favourites.

The humour in BtSS is awesome, it’s quick, sharp and left me laughing as I tried to keep reading. McGuire does an excellent job of making her books and her characters feel grounded and down to earth; despite it being set in a fantasy world.

Characters:

Still love Kade with all of my heart - I love that he’s had development since we last saw him in Every Heart - taking in more leadership roles and taking charge where Eleanor no longer can. This boy does things to my heart that just makes me want to scream into a void, he is my son and he must be protected.
I was delighted to see that we got more insight to Kade’s story and his time in Prism; I would still love to have a book about his story.

Christoper is a blessing, I liked him in EHAD but now that we’ve got to see more of him I’ve come to love him so much more. He’s funny and sweet and charming and just deserves a lot of happiness.

I love that we got to reunited with Nancy, and that it explored the Halls of the Dead, I think the world is very interesting and the concept of the Lord and Lady of the dead is one that I would love to read more about. I also love that we got to see Nancy feeling comfortable and at home.
Also the chemistry between Kade and Nancy is still adorable.

Cora seems to be a lovely character and her implied past is so incredibly sad but also one that I think a lot of people can relate to. Her friendship with Nadya is sweet and I’m glad that we got to see that Bond.
Nadya is also a badass character, head strong and driven.

Rini is also a badass character, despite being confused, she’s not too controlling and she fits in well with the group. As the story progressed we got see her grow and adapt to her situation, it was lovely to see how she developed surrounded by the others.

The friendships expressed in BtSS were wonderful to witness as they felt real, they felt natural and like a normal group of friends who just want the best for each other and who were seeking adventure. They kept each other grounded and helped each other in times of need, the way they interact with one another is lovely and something that makes these books even more enjoyable.

Diversity:

Beneath the Sugar Sky includes a FTM Trans Male character, a Bisexual/polyamorous Latino character, a Bisexual Japanese character, a Russian character with a prosthetic arm, an asexual character and a Muslim character.

Overall:

Beneath the Sugar Sky was probably my favourite book in the Wayward Children series! It was a wonderful combination of action, adventure and followed an incredible group of friends who were witty and grounded. Anyone looking for a short fantasy series that explores new worlds should definitely check out Seanan McGuire's Wayward series.
